Chinese indices stay trapped as EU trade tensions persists
(16-Oct-2026, 16:42 Hours IST)
Chinese equities demonstrated divergent performance on Friday, as investor sentiment was weighed down by persistent trade anxieties between China and the European Union (EU). The Shanghai Composite advanced 0.24% to 3,716.3, whereas the Shenzhen Component retreated 0.12% to 11,802.5, marking its lowest level in over a year.

Apprehension escalated as the European Union contemplated additional measures to constrain access to its single market and initiated a review of import data to detect potential increases in goods flowing into the region. Such actions may precipitate quotas on a wider array of Chinese products. China cautioned that it would respond reciprocally to any fresh EU trade measures or limitations affecting Chinese firms and their offerings.

Chinese regulators reinforced measures to bolster the equity market, prompting encouragement for corporate entities and sovereign funds to increase shareholdings and requesting certain investors to moderate divestment activity. Energy equities demonstrated resilience, with PetroChina advancing 1.35% and Sinopec increasing by 2.03%.

However, weakness in key equities tempered investor optimism. CATL retreated 0.54%, NAURA Technology decreased 2.68%, and East Money Information shed 1.15%. Both markets registered substantial declines for the week. The Shanghai Composite shed 2.56%, whereas the Shenzhen Component experienced a sharper contraction of 6.64%, signaling persistent investor apprehension concerning trade ambiguities and subdued market sentiment.
